Form Verses Creativity ~ Monometric

David  of The Skeptic’s Kaddish and I began a fun poetry partnership in April. We celebrated writing together a 100 verse renga, The Hyakuin  And within days, decided we would absolutely love to continue our writing collaboration and what has grown to be a warm friendship with a new poetry project.

We decided to explore poetry forms. A to Z. Each week one of us chooses a poetry form the other responds to. We completed our first series Form verses creativity in June ’22. And we’re now on to the next set of poetry forms A to Z ~ Creativity Verses Form. We added a little twist for version2.0, with a key word starting with the same letter.

For ‘M’, David selected the ‘Monometric’ form and the keyword ‘Motivation’.

M: Monometric

David’s Monometric

Motivation's escaping me;
in the real world, I can't be free.

Here's my simple explanation:
The problem's my imagination -
sworn foe of deep concentration!

I note the dark sorcerer's smirk
and terrible monsters that lurk...
Unsheathing sword, I go berserk -
First- save mankind, then - back to work!

Reluctantly... I'm back on Earth-
Where I must prove my added worth;
Of grand adventures there's a dearth;
And office work balloons my girth...
Why did no one warn me at birth

Sangeetha’s Monometric

Motivation is on the run
I give it chase and have some fun

I date dubious distractions
Hoping for an intervention
To lead my words to fruition

And then I see this bag of chips
And bring one wafer to my lips
Its crisp crunch plays clever mind tricks
Of course I turn then to Netflix

Thoughts, feelings, convictions lie low
Images, freedom, find a flow
Time's horizon shimmers aglow
Phrases make music and I know
Life motivates when I let go

Monometric?

• Begin with a couplet, then augment each succeeding stanza with one more line;
• Each stanza is to be independent mono-rhyme;
• Lines can be of any constant meter;
  • e.g., Iambic trimeter, iambic tetrameter, iambic pentameter, trochaic tetramter, trochaic pentameter, amphibrach dimeter, amphibrach trimeter, etc.;
• To summarize, the poet may choose ANY consistent meter and feet, and then apply mono-rhyme to increasing length stanzas.
